Alan represented the electorate of Mitchell in North-Western Sydney, as a Federal Member of Parliament from 1974 to November 2008. From 1981 to 1983 Alan was Parliamentary Secretary to the then Prime Minister, the Hon Malcolm Fraser. From 1985 to 1989 Alan was Shadow Minister for Immigration and Ethnic Affairs. From March 1996 to July 1997 Alan was Chief Government Whip in the Howard Government.
Additionally, whilst in Opposition, Alan also served as acting Coalition spokesman in many senior portfolios including Communications, Aviation and Tourism, Senior Citizens and Aged Care, Immigration and Ethnic Affairs, Finance and Small Business. Whilst in Parliament Alan was generally regarded as a specialist in tax, corporate, franchise, trade practices and other business legislation. He holds a strong continuing interest in immigration, housing and workplace practices. Since leaving parliament in 2008, Alan has taken up a number of positions in addition to that of Chairman Client Development for Mahony Dominic Lawyers and now Mahony Taren Lawyers. Those positions include Chairman of Life Education (NSW) and the chairmanship and membership of several other businesses and charitable boards. Qualifications
